The Pampa Galeras Barbara D'Achille National Reserve was established on May 5, 1967 through Law (R.S.) N 157-A. This reserve covers 6,500 hectares belonging to the peasant community of Lucanas, located in the department of Ayacucho, province and district of Lucanas.
Local flora in the reserve includes Festuca trees (Stipa ichu, Calamagrostis sp)., Tola (Lepidophyllum quadrangulare), Senecio sp., and the quishuar (Buddleja sp.).
The vicuna (Vicugna vicugna) is the most representative mammal in Pampa Galeras and the main purpose of this reserve is to protect these animals; we can also find the Guanaco (Lama guanicoe), which live free in the pampas.
The most impressive bird habitating in the Pampa Galeras National Reserve is the andean Condor (Vultor gryphus), other birds include the pissaca (Nothoprocta ornata), the Kiula (Tinamotis penhaldii), the pato jerga (Anas georgica) and the pato sutro (Anas flavirosatris).
