Its northern part is very rough because of the presence of the "Cordillera Azul", that has abrupt hillsides and deep valleys. The most important one is the canyon called "Boquerón del Padre Abad", one of the Peru's most beautiful and scenic natural landscapes. There are vertical cliffs with vegetation growing over rock and numerous crystalline cascades that fall from a height of over one hundred meters. It's an impressive and unforgettable panorama, one of the better known cascades is the so-called "Velo de la Novia" (Bride's Veil) or "Manto de la Virgen" (Virgen's Robe). This cascade is located at the end of the canyon coming into the Pampa de Sacramento.
Located at the south-west of the department, the so-called Cordillera del Sira has a rough topography. This cordillera separates the Ucayali river from the Pachitea and the Pichis. To the east of the Cordillera Azul there are the plains from which emerge isolated hills. Close to the border with Brasil is to be found Contamana, with hills of low altitude, with heights of up to 788 meters. On the banks of the Ucayali river are to be seen non-flood terraces. Sometimes these are very much eroded and become marshes named "tahuampas" or "aguajales".
This is Peru's youngest department, Ucayali was created in 1980. It is considered as the door that opens into the Peruvian Amazonian.
