The Manu Reserved Zone was established by Law R.S. N 151-80-AA-DGFF on June 1980, and is part of the territories corresponding to the Manu National Park, district of Fitzcarrald, province of Manu, department of Madre de Dios. It represents a good sample of a tropical forest.
Flora in the Manu Reserved Zone includes 60 meters high trees such as the Cedar (Cedrela sp.) the shihuahuaco (Diptrerix sp.), the lupuna (Ceiba sp.), the mat palo (Ficus sp.), the mahogany tree (Swietenia macrophylla), the Tornillo (Cedrelinga catende formis), the cetico (Cecropia sp.), the topa (Ochocoma sp.) and the lupuna (Chorisia sp.), among many others.
Local fauna includes birds like the aguila -eagle- harpía (Harpya harpyja), the jabirú (Jabiru my cteria), the Spatula rosada (Ajaia ajaja), the wild goose (Neochen jubata), the guacamayo (Ara sp.), the tucan (Ramaphastos sp.), and the jungle condor (Sarcoramphus papa); also mammals such as the puma, heron (Trigrisoma sp.) the shansho (Opisthocomus hoazin), the leoncito -small lion - (Cebuella pygmaea), the cotomono (Alovatta seniculus), the maquisapa negro (Ateles paniscus), the mono choro (Lagothrix Lagotricha), the fraile -monk- (Saimini scivreus), the tapie (Tapirus terrestris), the sajino (Tayassu tajacu), the river wolf (Pteronura brasiliensis), the otorongo (Panthero onca) among others.
Some reptiles to be found at the Manu Reserved Zone are the white aligator (caiman crocodilus), the black cayman (Melanosunchus niger), the anaconda (Eunectes murinus), the boa (Corallus sp.), the taricaya (Podocnemios unifilis), and the motelo turttle (Geochelone denticulata).
There are also several types of fishes such as the zúngaros, doncellas and the piranha.
At the Manu Reserved Zone, the tourism is increasing very fast, thanks to the beauty of its natural landscapes such as the river Manu, the cochas - quiet and lovely small lagoons - and also because of the presence of several lodges built in the area.
